Master Club - 2008 Grand National Pinewood Derby On Saturday, May 17th, the sound of highspeed pinewood cars racing down a fast, metal track could be heard echoing in the Packs Branch hills. Days of preparation... hours of sweat, splinters, and stress...all for this one event! Cheers, shouts of excitement and, yes, even sighs of agony were reported non-stop in this region. The breath-taking start of each race only briefly silenced the excited crowd, with shouts and smiles quickly returning as the cars sped toward the finish line. The adults, however, weren't the only ones reported as having fun! Over fifteen hand-made vehicles entered the race under the youth division; and kids, as well, experienced the thrill of side-by-side racing. The homemade cars were met at the finish line with smiles, bouts of laughter, and a look that resembled something of a kid having fun!! If this could get any better, I didn't know how...until... the food was brought out. Hot dogs, potato chips, desserts...a racer's dream! And, of course, the offer to re-energize was happily met by starving competitors of all ages! The trophies that were handed out to many, and the precious cars that were so delicately put together were passed around, admired, and congratulated by all the competitors present. Two individuals were able to win three trophies each!! (Their secret is still closely guarded and any information is only being offered through very costly means.) Truly, the greatest treasure from the day's activities, however, was the fellowship among the kids and adults alike. Tips for next year's returning competitors were offered by the more experienced racers, and a spirit of brotherly love was clearly evident in everyone present. Plans for next year's Grand National Race are already being thought up, and the excitement is bound to carry on for a good while to come. This was truly a grand event!! A big thank you to all who participated, prepared, and/or were present at this year's Grand National Race. A lot of hard work was richly rewarded by a fun-filled and profitable afternoon. If I could offer any advice for new com petitors from the lessons I learned this year, one would say: seek out the experi enced racers for tips, come to the race with your tires rolling, and prepare to have a blast!
